President Murray opened the meeting by welcoming everyone ,especially our guests Willian Hopkins and his father Derek.

 

David Brownson’s opening remarks focused on on tolerance and how it is needed more than ever in the present global climate.

 

President Murray conducted an impromptu but fruitful Fines Session.

 

Jan Northrop introduced our Guest Speaker, William Hopkins whom we had sponsored to attend this year’s National Rotary Summer Science School. 

 

William gave a very polished presentation detailing his experiences both academic and extra curricular during the School but it could be summed up succinctly in his own words as “the best two weeks of his life”.

From the started, he found it busier than he had expected with each day crammed with different exciting experiences ,covering each branch of science and conducted in various colleges and universities. A lot of hands on work took place, working in teams to conquer various challenges in different science fields. A total of 168 students attended the School, split into teams of around 28. He found it valuable to be working as part of a team problem solving.

The School gave him a taste of University life - both of day to day living and University level education- which he felt would prove very useful in the near future. It also had an impact on his future career plans - before attending he thought his studies would be maths based but now he feels his future is in engineering, probably in the geo-tech field.

And he is still in contact with the friends he made there.

 

Jan Dempsey thanked him on behalf of the Club, saying it was particularly appropriate as both her sons are engineers.

 

Myles gave the 3 Minute Speech, describing the concussion he is still being treated for after his accident a couple of months ago. There is a lot more to it than a simple bang on the head as he explained but hopefully he is now well on the road to recovery.

 

President Murray noted the volunteers need for up coming events.

He and Myles will be attending a Project Team meeting for Destination Kawaroa on Thursday.David Brownson gave an outline of his fund raising scheme- Council have given approval  for the stainless steel tags and we now need to consider the details. His detailed paper will be circulated to all members for their comments and contributions.

 

Gaylene said work is underway regarding the raffle and details will be also be circulated to members.

 

The Trust has received Donee status though a reg number is still needed. The Club will apply as well.
