The Rotary Club of Ngāmotu (Formerly New Plymouth) was chartered on the 10th June 1925. We are a Community Service, Business Networking organisation that has served the New Plymouth Community with distinction in its 95 years of existence. Many prominent New Plymouth citizens have been members over this time and the club has assisted in the establishment of local and national voluntary organisations carrying out numerous projects that have benefited the community. One of its most notable achievements has been the building of 8 Studio Pensioner Flats in Lemon St in 1974 (managed by The Rotary Club of Ngāmotu Charitable Trust) which has continued to provide accommodation for those in need today. In the last year all flats have been fully refurbished.
The club runs an annual charity golf tournament fundraiser at the New Plymouth Golf Club on the 2nd Friday of November. Beneficiaries have included, Taranaki Health Foundation, Taranaki Hospice, Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust and St Johns. This year The North Taranaki Riding Club for the Disabled will be our major beneficiary.
We currently meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month for fellowship and a dinner evening meal from 5.15pm with the opportunity to hear addresses from leaders in our community.
Club Members and partners also meet for a social night (generally in members homes) on the first Monday in the month.
While there is no formal meeting on the 3rd Monday of the month it is often used for project planning meetings.
More recently our focus has been on assisting local young people with opportunities for self development as well as hosting international exchange students as part of the International Rotary Youth Exchange Programme.
Rotary International is the worlds largest International voluntary community service organisation with 1.2 Million members. It is one of 2 voluntary organisations (the other was The Red Cross) that was invited to join the United Nations at the time of its establishment. The humanitarian involvement continues today through The Rotary Foundation and has been involved in many initiatives in that time including the current eradication of Polio supported by The Gates Foundation. There is opportunity to network internationally with 35,000 clubs worldwide and share extraordinary experiences of cultures and projects.
